The invention of the electric light bulb heralded a new era for industrialized society. Leaving behind the days of candlelight and gas lamps meant an increased measure of safety, and new freedom. In modern society, citizens now take for granted the ability to simply flick a switch, and have a room flooded with light. While not as drastic as moving from fire to electric light, there is a new change in the way one lights their home. Incandescent light bulbs, once the gold standard, are going the way of the dinosaur, and are being replaced with a new way of lighting, the LED bulb. From the LED desk lamp to the computer monitor, LED bulbs are being used throughout the home as a cost effective, environmentally friendly, effective lighting source.

LED bulbs are cost efficient.

LED bulbs have a longer useful life than traditional light bulbs. Some have estimated that they may last as much as ten times longer. While the upfront cost of LED bulbs has been greater than the cost of incandescent bulbs, there is a significant cost savings in having to buy fewer bulbs over the lifetime of a lamp or light fixture. LED lamps use significantly less energy than incandescent bulbs. Some have estimated that figure to be as much as 80% less, which results in a lower energy bill for a homeowner. Less heat development means lower cooling bills, as well. In addition, as the older bulbs are phased out, and LED lights become the mainstream choice, the cost of the LED bulb is decreasing, making it even more cost effective.

LED bulbs are better for the environment

Their longer life span is positive in more than cost savings. The negative environmental impact of disposable light bulbs is greatly reduced, since fewer bulbs, of course, means less waste in the landfills. The reduced energy use, and higher efficiency design result in a cleaner environment. Light emitting diode bulbs also result in less chemical pollution, as they degrade.

LED lights give more options for lighting in the home

A major benefit to having both a lower electric bill, and having to be less concerned about the overall environmental impact, is that it gives one more options for lighting one’s home. Holiday light displays are one example. In the past, holiday lights could add a significant amount to an energy bill, and with the economy’s downturn, resulted in many deciding to no longer be as extravagant with outdoor displays. However, with the low energy LED lights, one is free to enjoy the festiveness of holiday lights on one’s own home. This is, of course, true of year round indoor lighting as well. For the cost conscious, there is less worry about having to choose lower watt incandescent bulbs, and suffering the results of less light, or being consumed with frequently turning off lamps. LED bulbs provide the option of getting more use from existing lamps, and adding sources of light throughout a building.

LED bulbs are the future of lighting

Technological advancements continue to develop at an incredible rate. Some of the changes in technology include the use of LED in new televisions and computer monitors. Clearer images and a more modern look are the result. In home lighting, the superior energy conservation and lifespan, as noted above, have resulted in a change in federal standards, with LED bulbs being the preferred choice. In 2007, federal efficiency standards mandated that the old incandescent bulbs be phased out. That takes effect this year, with the 100 watt bulbs, and will continue in 2013 with the 75 watt until all of the older bulbs are no longer available. For consumers not yet using LED lighting, replacing current bulbs as they break or burn out with LED bulbs is a gradual way to adjust to the differences.

While LED lights are a solution for all of one’s lighting needs, they are a good choice for desk lamps. With an LED Desk Lamp, the lighting is softer and provides better illumination, resulting in less eyestrain when studying or reading. The LED lights may take a minute longer to reach the full illumination level, so one should realize that the light given at first switch is not the end result. An LED Desk Lamp, as with all LED light, will give a whiter color, rather than the yellowish glow of incandescent bulbs.

Technology continues to grow, and yet at the same time, society is seeking to protect the planet by minimizing damage. This means embracing advancements that provide greater convenience, but that also keep the planet strong, vibrant, and available for future generations. The invention of LED lighting encompasses both ideals.
